Paid Summer Research Experience

The Department of Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Utah announces a paid ($8-12/hour) summer research experience for up to 10 outstanding students who are currently in their Junior year in High School and have an interest in pursuing an education in engineering in areas listed below. Selected students will perform research for one of the many funded projects in the department and may qualify to earn 3 semester hours of college credit.

The Department of Metallurgical Engineering has several million dollars in research funding. Our research areas include:

  • Transformation of Coal into Liquid Fuels
  • Electronic Material Synthesis
  • Microcontamination Removal
  • Nanoparticle Synthesis
  • Specialized Coatings
  • Biomedical Material Synthesis
  • Metal Extraction
  • Metal Purification
  • Magnetic Material Synthesis
  • Iron and Steel Making
  • Metal Hydride Synthesis for Hydrogen Storage
  • Particle Separations
  • Water Purification
  • 3-Dimensional Imaging
  • Particle Size Reduction
  • Biologically-Enhanced Metal Extraction


We invite interested Juniors to apply for a summer research experience by submitting a completed on-line application by April 15, 2008. Students will be notified by May 7, 2008 regarding their final application status. Please contact Dr. Michael L.
