See the University of Utah International Admissions Office (IAO) and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for information on the requirements for admission and issuance of an I-20 Certificate of Eligibility. Note that the Department of Metallurgical Engineering requires a TOEFL of 71 IBT (197 CBT or 530 PBT), rather than 61 IBT (173 CBT or 500 PBT), if the TOEFL is not waived. The University of Utah International Center offers support services for international students. Students are usually on an F-1 visa. If/when you are admitted, International Admissions will send you an I-20 Certificate of Eligibility to use when applying for a visa. The financial statement and supporting documents (such as bank statements) must show a minimum amount in U.S. dollars to cover the first-year tuition and living expenses. See IAO for the current minimum. This may include financial assistance from the department, if offered. If the student is bringing family, an additional $2,500 is required per dependent. (Costs are subject to change.) The student takes the I-20, along with notice of acceptance, proof of financial responsibility, and a receipt for payment of the SEVIS fee, to the visa officer of the U.S. embassy or Consulate in their home country. See the U.S. Dept of State website for a list of embassies and consulates. To allow time for the visa to be issued, the appointment should be August 1 or earlier, for Fall semester, or December 1 or earlier, for Spring semester. If approved, the student is then granted a student visa to enter the U.S. International students may arrive up to forty-five (45) days before the start of the semester for which they are admitted, or no later than the last day to add classes (typically the second week of the semester). Attending an orientation is mandatory for all incoming international students. Since our department offers only thesis research during the summer, international students who start Summer semester should plan to take at least nine hours of coursework from another department that semester, to meet INS regulations. The University of Utah offers classes in English as a foreign (or second) language through the English Language Institute, part of the Division of Continuing Education. If you are offered admission, check what you must do, before you come to Utah, when you enter the U.S., and as soon as you arrive.
