- Organizes, executes and coordinates research investigations into non-ferrous metal extraction, smelting, and refining processes as well as developments of new products. The work involves research projects and pilot operations to evaluate conventional and pioneering developments in non-ferrous metal and other materials recovery from recycled sources such as batteries, scraps, dusts, residues, etc. and subsequent processing into products.
- Responsibilities
Direction Received Receives instruction on specific assignment objectives, methods of attack, information sources, points of emphasis, scope of work, and possible solutions. Prepares work outlines, budgets, and schedules under the direction of supervisor. Standard approaches and adaptions performed without supervision. Unusual approaches or problems solved jointly with supervisor. Work is reviewed for application of sound engineering principles. Responsibility Works as directed, but not normally under immediate supervision. Is responsible for applying creative, professional technical skills to the solving of materials processing, refining, extraction, and problems. This position may require the development of confidential data, reports, plans, programs, costs, new product, and process information. A high degree of integrity and good judgment is required in the discussion of this information. May be required to exercise extremely good judgment and ingenuity in work practices and interface with customers in use of products. Responsible for safety, housekeeping, and efficiency of laboratory and pilot plant equipment. Duties The Product Development Engineer conducts large and important research projects and involving non-ferrous metal extraction, refining, alloying, and materials processing into products. He/she plans and budgets the work involving pioneering research into areas where large blocks of data are currently unknown. The work involves smelting, refining, residue treatment, alloy and material development, equipment design, process development, pilot operations involving chemical, physical, hydrometallurgical, and pyrometallurgical processes for the recycling and subsequent processing of metals and materials into products. Examples of Work Performed The Product Development Engineer will be responsible for research projects from initiation to full scale pilot plant. The engineer shall develop alloys and products aimed at the battery industry, produce materials specifications, propose operating and capital costs, final design, and shall oversee product, process design, and implementation in the production plant until the process is turned over to production. The engineer shall assume professional and budgetary responsibility for his work and the facilities under his/her supervision. As required, he/she will give independent critical engineering advice for involving product and process development. Assists customers in use of products. Responsibility for the Direction of Others The Product Development Engineer generally will perform his/her own chemical, mechanical, physical, and processing tests and analyses according to a schedule and plans discussed with supervision. He/she may supervise laboratory technician and work with the technician to form a research team which will be responsible for conduct of research projects.
- Degree Required
- The Product Development Engineer shall be a graduate with a degree in metallurgical engineering, chemical engineering, or mechanical from a curriculum accredited by the Engineers Council for Professional Development. An advanced degree or management experience is a plus.

- The ideal candidate would have research experience in hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical extraction and processing of metals and materials.
