International Graduate Students

The University of Utah International Center offers support services for international students.

Attending an orientation is mandatory for all incoming international students.

If you are offered admission, check what you must do, before you come to Utah, when you enter the U.S., and as soon as you arrive on campus.

TOEFL

Note that the Department of Metallurgical Engineering requires a TOEFL of 71 IBT (197 CBT or 530 PBT), higher than the university's requirement of 61 IBT (173 CBT or 500 PBT), if the TOEFL is not waived.

The University of Utah offers classes in English as a foreign (or second) language through the English Language Institute, part of the Division of Continuing Education.

Questions regarding TOEFL scores should be directed to International Admissions.

I-20 CERTIFICATE OF ELIGIBILITY

Students are usually on an F-1 visa. If/when you are admitted, International Admissions will send you an I-20 Certificate of Eligibility to use when applying for a visa.

See the University of Utah International Admissions Office (IAO) and the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for information on the requirements for admission and issuance of an I-20 Certificate of Eligibility.

The financial statement and supporting documents (such as bank statements) must show a minimum amount in U.S. dollars to cover the first-year tuition and living expenses. See IAO for the current minimum. This may include financial assistance from the department, if offered. If the student is bringing family, an additional amount is required per dependent. All costs are subject to change.

The student takes the I-20, along with notice of acceptance, proof of financial responsibility, and a receipt for payment of the SEVIS fee, to the visa officer of the U.S. embassy or Consulate in their home country. See the U.S. Dept of State website for a list of embassies and consulates. To allow time for the visa to be issued, the appointment should be August 1 or earlier, for Fall semester, or December 1 or earlier, for Spring semester (Iranian applicants should plan on an extra three to six months to obtain a visa). If approved, the student is then granted a student visa to enter the U.S.

International students may arrive up to forty-five (45) days before the start of the semester for which they are admitted, or no later than the last day to add classes (typically the second week of the semester).

Questions regarding financial statements or I-20s should be directed to International Admissions.

SUMMER ADMISSION

Our department does not offer any courses during the summer. Students who are admitted for Summer term should plan on taking either courses in another department or thesis research.
