Graduate Costs

Application Fees are described in the section on Applications.

1. TUITION & FEES

For total tuition and fees per semester, see

Students must register for two semesters per year, so the annual cost is twice the amounts given. This does not include living expenses. All costs are subject to change without notice.

2. LIVING EXPENSES

The cost of living in Salt Lake is close to the U.S. national average. Admissions provides an estimate of living expenses for international or nonresident students. International students must have a minimum amount of financial support, from savings, family, a sponsor, the department, or other sources, before they can receive a visa (see Information for International Students).

3. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

If available, support could be a position either as a research assistant or (rarely) as a teaching assistant. The department does not have scholarships for graduate students.

It is not necessary to apply separately for financial support. If your application is approved, your eligibility for financial support will be considered by the faculty.

A faculty member who has funding from a research project selects a research assistant based on academic excellence and compatibility of research interests. Research assistants typically work on a research project related to their thesis research. The position usually provides tuition and living expenses.

On average, about ten students join the department every year with financial assistance from us.

The availability of research assistantships depends, of course, on the number of research contracts awarded to the faculty. It is impossible to predict in advance the availability of funds or your chances of getting financial assistance. Everything depends on the number of students selected for admission versus the number of research grants available.

Research projects begin at different times throughout the year, and some students graduate in the Fall, leaving a research position vacant. Thus, the possibility of a research position being available is about equal Fall and Spring Semesters.

You may contact a professor working in the area of your interest and request that he or she look particularly at your application. Some professors require formal application to the University before they will examine your credentials.

Selection as a teaching assistant requires demonstrated proficiency. Therefore, teaching assistants are usually not first-year students. Teaching assistants in our department do not receive a tuition waiver.
