Please read and fill out the application carefully. Write/Select "Metallurgical Engineering" for Proposed Academic Plan (major field of study). Unlike at most universities, the University of Utah's Department of Metallurgical Engineering is a department by itself, and is not part of the Department of Material Science and Engineering.
If your g.p.a. is not calculated on a 4.0 scale, you may convert it to a 4.0 scale: your g.p.a./scale x 4.0 = g.p.a. on 4.0 scale. Alternately, you may leave the g.p.a. space blank. Admissions recalculates your g.p.a. from your transcripts in any case.

The application fee is US $65.00 for International students and US $55.00 for American citizens and permanent residents. Send the application fee to the Admissions Office (or International Admissions). Make checks payable to the University of Utah. If you apply on-line, write your student ID (assigned during application) on the check. Application fees must be paid in full prior to the University deadline. Evaluation of an application does not begin until the application fee is received. We are not authorized to waive the application fee under any circumstances. All fees are subject to change.
Applicants must have a recognized undergraduate degree, comparable to a four-year degree, from an institution of higher learning recognized by the home country's Ministry of Education. An overall grade average of B or better (3.0 on a 4.0 scale) is required on the undergraduate record. Transcripts and diplomas are required of all previous university-level schooling, showing the degrees awarded. To be considered official, these must be mailed by the schools attended directly to the Admissions Office (for international applicants, to International Admissions). Official transcripts and diplomas are required in the original language, with official English translations if the school does not routinely issue official transcripts and diplomas in English. See International Graduate Student Admission for details on additional documents required for international applicants. Applicants who have not completed all courses required for the award of the degree of B.S. in Metallurgical Engineering, or equivalent courses at other universities, will need to take these as part of their graduate degree study. When requesting ETS to send reports of test scores, the institutional code for the University of Utah is 4853. The department code for Metallurgical Engineering is 1404.
If the applicant did not list the University of Utah as one of the
schools to receive their test results, they may request official copies
be sent to Admissions (the TOEFL) or the department (the GRE) from Educational Testing Service, PO Box 6151, Princeton, New Jersey 08541-6151, USA.
When choosing a test date to register for, keep in mind that it
typically takes several weeks after the test for the score to be
transmitted to the university.
GRE
Some of our professors look at GRE scores when awarding research assistantships from their research grants. We encourage you to take the GRE general test to add to your background credentials and thus increase your chances of financial assistance from the department. GRE Verbal and Quantitative scores of 1250 (combined) or higher and an Analytical Writing score of at least 4.5 are considered satisfactory. GRE scores should be sent to the department office. If the applicant is not from an English-speaking country (United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Canada excluding Quebec, American Samoa, and Puerto Rico), the university requires either a minimum Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 61 internet-based (IBT) (173 computer-based (CBT) or 500 paper-based (PBT)), or a transcript from a university in the U.S. indicating that the applicant has or will receive a degree. The department prefers a minimum TOEFL score of 71 IBT (197 CBT or 530 PBT). The TOEFL examination is valid for only two years. If the TOEFl score expires between acceptance and admission, the student may be asked to retake the TOEFL upon arrival at the university. Starting Summer 2010, International Admissions will also accept the IELTS, with a score of 5.

Three personal recommendation letters from former professors or work colleagues and a brief statement (one to two pages) of your main professional and research interests and your career goals (a "Statement of Purpose") should be sent to the department address. There isn’t a form or particular format for recommendation letters. The letters should be on the letterhead (stationery) of the organizations or universities of the people writing the letters.
Transfer credits must be a grade of B or better, graduate level, and not used for any other degree.
The following should be sent to Admissions: - application,
- application fee, and
- official transcripts, diplomas, and class rank, from all schools, mailed by the school Registrar directly to Admissions (or International Admissions).
International applicants should send, in addition, - official TOEFL test results,
- a copy of the first page of current passport or national ID card, and
- a financial statement with supporting documents showing a minimum amount in U.S. dollars to cover the first-year tuition and living expenses. (Your application can be evaluated without the financial statement. A financial statement is necessary before an I-20 Certificate of Eligibility is issued. If you are offered financial assistance from the department, the department will supply the financial statement.)

Metallurgical Engineering admits students during all semesters: Fall, Spring, and Summer. Due to visa regulations, we recommend that international students start Fall or Spring semester rather than Summer term. Applications require an additional $30 late handling fee if received after April 1st for Fall Semester, November 1st for Spring Semester, or March 15th for Summer semester. The university deadlines are based on how long it takes to process applications from U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Evaluation of international applications takes longer, and, once accepted, successful international applicants must then apply for and receive a visa. For these reasons, the university’s International Admissions Office recommends that international applicants apply 90 days in advance of the official deadline; that is, by January 1st for Fall semester, August 1st for Spring semester, or December 15th for Summer term.
Applications after the recommended deadline are still considered. However, admission is for a specific semester, and international applicants who apply after the department's recommended deadline often don’t receive their acceptance letter and I-20 Certificate of Eligibility soon enough to get a visa before the semester starts.
Acceptance can be adjusted by only one term. For example, if an applicant is accepted for Fall Semester but then is unable to attend until Spring, Admissions will, with the department's approval, change the acceptance from Fall to Spring. If the applicant wants to come in a subsequent academic year, they must reapply and pay another application fee. Note to Iranian applicants: Please allow an extra three to six months, due to the extended time required to obtain a visa. That means applying a full year in advance of the semester for which admission is desired. You may check the status of your application and what documents are still needed. Our department graduate admissions committee has not received your application until the status says "out to department." Once your file is complete (application, fee payment, TOEFL score if applicable, and transcripts), Admissions evaluates it. International applications take longer to evaluate. Due to the heavy volume of submissions for Fall Semester, also allow extra time for applications submitted between December and March. Following evaluation by Admissions, the application comes for review to the Department of Metallurgical Engineering. It is examined by the department admissions committee and a decision made to recommend acceptance or to deny admission. Since most applicants need financial assistance, application files are circulated to the faculty, to see if someone has funding for a new graduate student and is interested in offering the applicant a research assistant position, based on the applicant's academic qualifications and research interests. This often takes a month or more. If you have your own support from a scholarship, savings, or sponsor, and financial assistance from the department is not desired, please inform the department so your application will not be delayed while the department admissions committee looks for possible funding for you. After evaluation by the department, the application file is then returned to Admissions with the department's recommendation of acceptance or denial. Admissions makes the final decision about acceptance; if the applicant's prior degree and TOEFL scores meet university requirements, usually Admissions accepts the department's recommendation. Admissions will send a letter informing the applicant of the decision.
In the case of international applicants, if a research assistantship is being offered, the department provides the proof of funding, and Admissions will prepare an I-20 Certificate of Eligibility. Otherwise, Admissions will request proof of funding from the applicant in order to issue the I-20. This entire process can take three or four months, so apply well in advance of your anticipated admissions semester.
Students are required to have medical insurance. You may get insurance either through the insurance company with whom the University has a contract to provide insurance to students, or through other companies. The University requires all new and transfer students born after December 31, 1956 to provide proof of vaccination or evidence of immunity against measles, mumps, and rubella. Student Health Service
