Location

The department library is located in 412B WBB, inside room 412 (135 S 1460 E Rm 412B, Salt Lake City UT 84112-0114).

Checkout Policy

Books may be checked out by University of Utah metallurgical engineering majors and department staff and faculty and are due at the end of each semester or when recalled.

Department students, faculty, and staff may borrow a thesis or dissertation for a maximum of two days. If a copy is needed longer than that, please check it out from the Marriott Library or get your own copy from ProQuest.

How to find a book on the shelf once you have a call number

Books are shelved by call number. The department library is slowly being converted to a Library of Congress numbering system.

If both the old shelving number and a Library of Congress call number are provided, first look under the old shelving number, then under the LoC call number.  Some older, infrequently used books are shelved in the copy room (412A WBB).

If the book is in none of those location, check the front of the index notebook (burgundy three-ring binder) to see if the book is lost. If not, ask Kay whether the book is checked out. Where available, provide her both the shelving number and the Library of Congress call number.

A Note to Visitors to Our Site

Books, theses, and dissertations may be read in our library. We regret we are unable to provide books through interlibrary loan. To find a library that has a copy of a book you are looking for, see (for instance) WorldCat. To purchase a copy, check used book sellers, particularly on-line.

Theses and dissertations are available for in-house use in the Special Collections reading room at the Marriott Library. To obtain electronic or printed copies of theses and dissertations, check USpace or Proquest. If an item is not available online, the Special Collections department of the University of Utah Marriott library will photocopy on request.

Scanning Probe Microscope

Scanning Probe Microscope

Scientific instruments, such as this scanning probe microscope, allow metallurgical engineers to view materials at the atomic level to more clearly understand their properties.
