Synopsis

Prediction of the size distribution of a SAG mill involves first selecting the appropriate model and then estimating its parameters. A breakage distribution function, based on energy input, was obtained using drop weight tests on the experimental material. An ultra fast load cell gave information about particles' fracture energies. DEM energy spectra provided data on the frequency of the different energy levels of impact events occurring in the mill. After estimating breakage rates and breakage distributions based on impact energy, the size distribution of the SAG mill was computed with a modified population balance model. The model is verified with data collected from a 90 x 15 cm batch mill.
